The eye of E-Line Vision

Personal project · Houdini, VEX and Octane

My logo is an eye, and it is my eye. As a 3D & VFX artist, my work is all about looking and light, so it was a perfect fit. For this project, I rebuilt the logo in 3D in Houdini and rendered it in Octane.

From 2D to 3D

My logo started out flat, in 2D: an eye with a golden iris and white lashes. In Houdini, I built the eye procedurally. The iris got depth and a metallic sheen, and lines and paint splashes now surround the eye.

Inspired by Jackson Pollock

For the lines and splashes, I was inspired by Jackson Pollock. For his famous drip paintings, he laid the canvas on the floor and let the paint drip and splash onto it. In Houdini, I generated those splashes and lines with VEX.

Light

I chose hard light from the side and from above, so the small details in the iris and the paint really stand out. I rendered the final image in Octane.

The animation

I’m currently creating a 3D animation of my eye in Houdini. The images above are a first glimpse.
